Art is More Than Beauty; It Can Help Us Heal

Democrat and Chronicle Guest Column

The role of art and creativity in helping us to heal is centuries old. Creation is a natural counterbalance in our lives, giving us ballast and hope - purpose and meaning - in a world that can only too easily and too often be shattered by trauma and loss.

Psychotherapists across the world often employ art therapy strategies as part of a broader approach to help patients deal with painful, sometimes buried, emotions in a safe, supportive environment. Art therapy is especially useful with young children and with adults with limited verbal skills, whose ability to articulate is impossible in literal language.

Art functions as a universal metaphoric language, enabling even a very young child to communicate. Music, theatre, dance, literature, and – of course – visual art, utilize tone, shape, color, size, juxtaposition, and symbol to less directly but often even more powerfully indicate an individual’s inner state of being.

In addition, the very nature of good art is beautifully aligned with the very essence of good therapy: both move in the realm of the unconscious mind. It is the ability of art to tap into unconscious, unstated thoughts and feelings that gives it exceptional effectiveness as a therapeutic tool.

And of course the importance of harnessing an individual’s creative spirit when faced with destructive forces cannot be overstated. Creativity taps into our goodness, our intelligence, our pathos, our appreciation for beauty, our universality, our desire to communicate, and the very core of what makes us human.

Perhaps no loss is greater, and certainly no loss is more final, than the passing of a loved one. It is no surprise, then, that art therapy is increasingly being seen as an important consideration by mental health and health professionals when addressing issues of grief. What is not common, however, is the development and provision of art therapy programs by funeral homes and other businesses that, while outside of the healing professions, come in contact with people in need every day.

Most of us are not comfortable discussing loss nor are we typically encouraged to do so. Beyond this, sometimes words and conventional therapy are not enough. Without intervention, some people remain traumatized and “stuck,” unable to rejoin the world in a constructive and meaningful way. The act of creation can be a powerful way to move through pain and toward life. We believe that alternative nontraditional approaches for connecting with and helping people find their way after experiencing the trauma of death can play an important role in keeping our community healthy and productive.

The Art of Healing Launches at Bartolomeo & Perotto

When Rochester-based Bartolomeo & Perotto Funeral Home first conceived of providing art therapy to the grieving families they comfort every day, it was a bit of an extraordinary idea. It was, however, an understandable evolution for a third generation family-owned funeral home, which has been at the forefront of providing supportive outlets and annual events for the bereaved for more than two decades. Since its inception in 1998, their annual butterfly release program has grown astronomically in popularity, drawing hundreds of families to the serene setting at the YMCA’s Camp Northpoint each August to release hundreds of butterflies into the surrounding skies in homage to the released, departed souls that are still mourned and not forgotten. From the beginning, the power of that event hinted at the great thirst of most people for a timeless and symbolic place to express and redirect their grief.

In response, Bartolomeo & Perotto set about to develop an adjunct program, one that would give mourners an ongoing outlet to deal with their loss. After conducting research and an extensive search, in 2017, Bartolomeo & Perotto launched a pilot art therapy program, The Art of Healing, guided by a therapist who was originally trained at Rochester’s Nazareth College, an institution known for its art therapy program. This past spring, the program was showcased at the Greece Regional Chamber’s Health & Senior Housing Expo, sponsored by Rochester Regional Health, and has already been very well received by area families and is anticipated to grow steadily over the next few years.
