Proposed New York State Minimum Wage Increase
Greece, NY, January 15, 2016 –The Greece Chamber of Commerce today made the following announcement:
The Greece Chamber of Commerce has serious concerns regarding New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s recent proposed increase in minimum wage to $15 an hour, up from the newest increase to $9 an hour, which just went into effect on December 31, 2015. Increasing minimum wage by more than 60%, especially on the heels of an increase each year for the last three years, is dramatic and unreasonable, creating a heavy burden for both small and large businesses and making it likely that they will cut back on employment in order to manage this significant payroll expense increase.

New York State Increase in Minimum Wage for Fast Food Workers
Greece, NY, August 19, 2015 –The Greece Chamber of Commerce today made the following announcement:
“The Greece Chamber of Commerce has serious concerns regarding the State of New York’s recent action to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2021 for fast food industry workers (a 71% increase in the current minimum wage of $8.75 an hour), which we see as having a potentially negative impact on businesses, especially the many small businesses in our membership region-wide. We believe this unfairly attacks those members who are small business franchise owners, makes it harder than ever for local restaurants outside of the fast food industry to compete and survive, and opens the door to raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour in other industries as well.

Manufacturing Innovation Institute for Integrated Photonics
Greece Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Sarah Lentini released the following statement regarding the recent announcement from the White House:
"Vice President Biden’s recent announcement that a Manufacturing Innovation Institute for Integrated Photonics will be developed in Greece with over $600 million in public and private funds holds promise for our community’s economy and our nation’s economic growth by helping develop and commercialize a wide range of photonics business applications. This investment helps brand our town and our region as a national center for photonics expertise and positions the United States to continue to compete on a global scale and lead the world in manufacturing.
Through the collaboration of government at all levels, our region has been given an important opportunity to showcase our talented workforce, our leading educational institutions, and our exceptionally innovative and entrepreneurial business community. The Greece/Greater Rochester region, already a respected resource within the U.S. manufacturing sector, is now ideally positioned as a global leader in photonics.
We are especially supportive of Vice President Biden’s description of his vision for this effort as one that involves “insourcing” work throughout many different industries to create good-paying jobs and once again grow our middle class.
The Greece Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all that were involved in bringing this national center to our region. We join them in recognizing all the expertise that exists here and in expressing our commitment to help nurture and grow business and jobs in our community in this new manufacturing era."
