Sustainability: The Role of Business
Sustainability. It's a big word. And yet, in a sense, it should be very understandable to us - pretty much hard wired - as, at its core, it means survival and, in most cases, living beings instinctively seek to survive.
Survival - in all its forms - is built on decisions and actions that we take not just individually but also collectively and in a number of realms. We will need more than a village to take on challenges such as the depletion of our natural resources, the destruction of our environment and natural habitats, the pollution of our air and water, and the extinction of various plant and animal species - homo sapiens included.
Businesses of course need to sustain themselves as well, faced with immediate bottom-line urgencies that must be of priority consideration in order to maintain themselves and grow.
The needs of businesses may not always seem to mesh with the more global needs of communities. They are, however, in many ways not only convergent but interdependent. Increasingly, business leaders have not only recognized this but have found highly effective strategies and models to marry corporate economic sustainability with global environmental sustainability - as just one example.
We have a vested interest in addressing sustainability collaboratively and in shaping our approach to individual sustainability in a way that contributes to community sustainability. We are likely to discover surprising and fruitful ways - as others have - to create a synergy between seemingly competing interests that, in the long run, help not just our local and global communities but also help distingush our commercial efforts and our bottom lines.
The Greece Regional Chamber has lined up three outstanding presenters on this very topic for our March Third Thursday Luncheon at Ridgemont Country Club, Business Sustainability. Each speaker has a long history of working with local and global issues of business, environmental and economic sustainability:
Todd Bigger President, Kodak Software Division & Vice President, Eastman Kodak Company
Dr. Nabil Nasr Associate Provost and Director of the Golisano Institute for Sustainability Rochester Institute of Technology
Chander Sharma Founder and Managing Partner BizXL Solutions of US and Canada
I hope you will consider joining us as we explore an important topic with these distinguished panelists.
